Welcome - William Quiviger to Mozilla July 18, 2008

This week, I had the great pleasure of welcoming William Quiviger to the Mozilla team in Europe.

William will be based in our Paris hub. I’m happy to say as part of the marketing team, he’ll be giving more focus to community marketing, plus fostering and enabling participation in Europe. He’s an interesting character, being born French, but growing up mostly in the US and traveling extensively. Amongst a passion for British Comedy and Fish (yes, with a capital) - he has a great talent for bringing people together and helping them make things happen.

You can follow Williams blog and Tweets here:

You’ll be hearing alot more from William soon.

Welcome William - we are excited to see what great things you will bring to Mozilla.

Mozilla’s Guinness World Record Certificate July 14, 2008

Back in the UK now and catching up…. and trying to get over the jet lag.. again..

I posted last week on the official Mozilla blog about the GWR certificate:

http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2008/07/10/mozillas-guinness-world-record-certificate/

Just wanted to shout out here before its too late to Ian, Davina, Charlie, and Peter at Glaxstar who organized and sponsored the event - we couldn’t have done this without you! Thank you too for eBay who also bought drinks!

Big thanks to Tristan who came over from Paris to accept the award and to Gerv Markham who attended on behalf on the Mozilla Foundation. Seth was carrying the all important cargo back from Europe this weekend to share the certificate with Mozillians in the US.

Unfortantely I missed it. but from what I can see here - a great time was had by all! :)

Jane in sunny Mountain View this week July 9, 2008

I’m working from glorious Mountain View this week at our Mozilla HQ. After leaving a very wet and gloomy English summer, I’m delighted (if a little hot under the collar) to be basking in the mini heatwave California is enjoying. Yesterday we reached the high 90s, and today its set to top more than 100 degrees. I’ll certainly be making the most of that sunshine before heading back home - its usually a once a century occassion for the UK!

Its only the start of day Wednesday here and its already been a very productive week. I’ve been meeting with my Marketing team colleagues, plus the Addons team, Window Snyder, and by the end of the week I’ll have met with most of the folks who we work closely with from our US based team. We’ve been talking a bunch of things and working through ideas for the rest of the year. Its been great to catch up with people I work with every day and meet some of the new folks who have recently joined. More on this next week.

Latest from Xiti Monitor - “Two in one for Mozilla Firefox” July 7, 2008

Xiti releases a studyon on the impact of Download Day and the launch of Firefox 3 in Europe:
http://www.xitimonitor.com/en-us/browsers-barometer/ff3-june-2008/index-1-2-3-133.html?xtor=11

Quoting Xiti - “Download Day” is plain to see: the average share of visits by Firefox 3 in European countries practically doubled between June 17 and 18, 2008:

* From June 9 to 17, Firefox 3’s market share is pretty stable…
* before rising from 3.6% on June 17 to 6.5% on June 18, 2008 with the launch of its official release.

Firefox 3’s share of visits then rises day by day to hit 9.3% on June 22, 2008, or almost one visit in every ten on average in Europe and a threefold rise during the week when “Download day” took place”.

They go on to show the table above with EU’s average market share hovering around 34% - which would be a 5% increase since the last Xiti report was published in April (http://www.xitimonitor.com/en-us/browsers-barometer/firefox-march-2008/index-1-2-3-127.html). The numbers in this table are pretty changeable, reaching 34% 2 days before the launch of Fx 3.

Xiti should be publishing their quarterly report at the end of this month - it will be interesting to see the numbers for EU over this longer period.

Understanding the Web browser threat:
Examination of vulnerable online Web browser populations and the “insecurity iceberg” :

http://www.techzoom.net/publications/insecurity-iceberg/

Published Jul 1st by researchers from Google, IBM and the Communication Systems Group in Switzerland, Quoting the Washinton post: “The researchers found that of the 1.4 billion Internet users worldwide at the end of March 2008, 576 million surfed with outdated versions of Web browsers”.

Extensive research of online surfing habits finding that only 60% of the World’s Web users are surfing the Internet with the latest, and most-secure version of their  Web browsers. And infact their findings show Firefox users are by far the most up to date users on the Web.
Read a great write up from Asa here: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/2008/07/staying_up_to_d.html

The study proposes’s the following…”To help combat existing and rapidly evolving threats such as malicious drive-by downloads, we have proposed the concept of a “best before” date for software and related mechanisms to tackle user awareness and provide a vehicle for online businesses to better assess the risk level of their customers’ hosts. ” Excellent idea.

Independence Day - Celebrate Web Freedom July 4, 2008

Today, millions of people are celebrating Independence Day in America. Originally, begun to celebrate the Declaration of independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776, millions are simply celebrating family, togetherness and freedom. Being a Brit with many American friends - some in the US, some in the UK trying to reclaim their dependence, I’ve celebrated many an Independence Day and always enjoyed partaking in the celebration of freedom (the Brits were all too happy to take that away from so many over the centuries).

Since joining Mozilla last year, I’ve spent alot of time thinking about what Freedom means particularly on the Web, and for the Web. Be that Freedom from the often evils of propriety technology, freedom to choose and online privacy, to accessibility and security. Its clear to me that here at Mozilla we have been doing an amazing job with our products and work, but there is a long way to go before the Web is closer to the vision we set out in the original Mozilla Manifesto guiding principles. Every day though we do get a little closer, and the Mozilla community grows a little stronger.

Launching Firefox 3 on June 17th recently, and seeing the amazing 8M+ number of downloads clock up in 24-hours - I was thrilled to see so many people freely making a choice on which Web browser they use. In fact, since those 24 hours, another 22M of you have also made that choice (Firefox 3 was now downloaded more than 30 million times in the last 18 days). To take a trip back down memory lane — some years ago, selecting your Web browser of choice was virtually impossible, there was really only one choice for most people. I’m glad to say we’ve come a long way since those days. Mozilla as an open source project and movement has been pivotal in driving back innovation and bringing forward choice to this most important window on the Web. But the work is by far not done, and we are only at the foot of the mountain.

So today on July 4th, I would urge you to also help promote freedom and choice on the Web.

Tell someone they do have a options,

show them how they can participate,

help them understand they too can help make the Web a better place for everyone.

Happy July 4th!
